Baby Furniture - What Do You actually need

Walking into a baby furniture store could be completely mind blowing - there's so much stuff! Most of us do not have a limitless amount of money to spend, and if you haven't had a baby before, it may be very hard to sort out what's really necessary, useful, or basically a waste of time. If you are planning to setup a gift register at the shop, you need to make sure the things you put on it are useful and practical. It's can all be incredibly confusing.

Let us take a glance at some of the main items you are going to get in the baby store, to be able to possess some concept of what baby furniture you really want or need before you even arrive at the store. That way you can concentrate on picking which one you want, rather than messing about deciding whether you really want or require it.

Baby Bassinet or Cradle

A bassinet or cradle is used from birth until around 4 months. Basically, when the baby can roll from side to side, it's the perfect time for baby to move up right into a crib. Make sure the mattress fits snugly from the sides. You may even discover that a padded bumper, sheets and quilt are included. The bassinet probably falls somewhere in the middle between necessary and unnecessary. If you're on a tight budget, you can certainly go without one. Having said that, I loved my bassinet and wouldn't happen to be without them. It is so easy to be able to move baby around. I generally let baby sleep in his own room during the day, and used an infant monitor, then during the night wheeled baby's bassinet into my room. Mine might be rocked gently to assist baby fall asleep, and since it was up on a stand, it was easy to life baby out and in - I was recovering from a caesarean.

So my advice would be - if you can fit a bassinet into your budget, get it done. Perhaps this is an item that the few family or friends could upgrade on your child shower.

Bubs and Grubs

Baby Crib or Cot

Some kind of secure bed for baby is certainly required. Spending a fortune buying one isn't required! You can buy cribs inside a massive range of styles - having a huge range of prices to match. Possibly the main thing to look for is to make sure the crib adheres towards the required safety standards. Make sure that the mattress fits snugly against the sides from the crib. Some other helpful features are: an adjustable base height, a few release mechanisms (not merely one, in case baby learns how to do it!), lockable wheels, and no stickers that may be peeled off easily.

Crib Mattress

Many cribs include their own mattress, and that is probably the best option since it should fit the crib snugly. There are two types of mattress - inner spring/coil or foam. Generally, the innerspring style of mattress can last considerably longer, but is generally a little more expensive. It's worth buying some kind of waterproof mattress pad, to protect the mattress, but make certain it doesn't have any plastic quietly the baby will be resting on.

Bedding Accessories

It is really an area where you can start to take the serious dollars! It is easy to get carried away with the cute and gorgeous designs for baby crib bedding. Thankfully most cribs and bassinets use standard sizes, which makes things a little easier. One good technique is to buy the necessary basics yourself, then put all the less necessary accessories on your baby shower gift register. In addition to the basic sheets, I've always liked to have a bumper for that top quality of baby's bed - and ensure it ties on in multiple places, so several tie needs to break before it can fall down. You shouldn't make use of a pillow for baby, and even quilts or comforters aren't recommended - stick to ordinary blankets. You may also frequently get added extras, for example diaper stackers. Personally I've never found them of much use, however, a few of the extra might make good baby shower gifts.

Changing Table

If you're really strapped for cash, you'll be able to probably make do with using your bed like a changing table, but when you are able to, this is something I recommend. Your back will definitely prefer it! My changing table was actually more like a set of dresser drawers, and nowadays, with the changing table part removed, it's still getting used as drawers for my daughter's clothes. Therefore it pays to think ahead and purchase a changing table that's practical. Also search for safety features, such as guardrails and perhaps even safety straps. Not to mention it needs to be well padded! It's handy to have some sort of shelf where one can put items you're using, but personally I simply put them down one end from the changing table and changed baby in the other end. Once baby got bigger, I made use of the top drawer.

Rocking Chair

This has to be around the "maybe" list. A lot of women recommend them, but personally I never had one and it never bothered me in the slightest. So this is likely to come down to personal preference and your budget. With that said, you will need a comfortable chair to sit in, especially if you're nursing.

Portable Crib

This is one bit of baby furniture that got used a great deal during my household! My son accustomed to arrived at use me when he was little, and I used a transportable crib for his naps. It had been great when I went to visit friends and family, because baby was familiar with it and pleased to have a nap when the time came. I also didn't have to be worried about baby rolling off someone's bed. It meant that we could go on holidays and know that baby had somewhere safe and familiar to rest. I made use of mine so much which i wound up needing to buy a second one when my daughter arrived! It is important, though, to spend a while making sure the portable crib you select is well constructed and safe. Make sure it can't collapse easily, especially if baby attempts to climb out. Check there aren't any small spaces where fingers might get trapped, and a collapsible padded base is very helpful.

High Chair

A higher chair rates not far from the essential end from the scale. The good news is you don't need one immediately, so you can delay buying it until a number of months after baby comes into the world. Search for a variable tray, restraints of some type and perhaps even lockable rolling casters. Some models also have a reclining seat, so you can utilize it even when baby continues to be bottle feeding.

Car Seat

This has to be essential - apart from ensuring your baby's safety, you're downloading copyrighted movies in many places without having one. Newborns must travel within the back seat from the car, facing the rear. Once baby is older, usually closer to 12 months old, you can put baby inside a forward facing car seat. When your child is older again, between 24 months upwards based on their size, you can change to a booster seat. The major decision you'll have here's whether to buy separate, engineered car seats for baby and your toddler, or whether or not to buy a convertible model. Personally I always had 2 separate car seats, mostly because all of the consumer safety research I'd seen suggested that the created specifically car seat was more effective within an accident. Thankfully I never tested that theory out! Construction and safety levels are constantly improving, however, so if buying a convertible model is where your financial allowance is, that's okay too.

Strollers

This really is another baby item where there appears to be too many choices. Firstly you need to decide which style of stroller you would like, before even taking a look at individual brands. At some point you are going to wish to transport your baby, which means you will need to buy something. You need to start by using a long, hard think about what you expect your movements to be with your child. Are you planning to take baby jogging with you? Go over rougher terrain regularly? Or are you going to probably only put baby inside a stroller in the shops? Would you like a pram that may later be converted into a stroller? Once you have a concept what type of things you will need to make use of your stroller for, a salesman at the baby store will be able to show you within the right direction. You then have to consider what added features you might like - accessory bars, toy and activity bars, headrests, adjustable height, rain shields etc. Deciding on the best stroller is most likely going to get you some time!

Baby Monitor

An infant monitor probably isn't necessary, but I always found it was great for reassurance. It meant I could be off in another area of the house doing something, but nonetheless be monitoring my baby's nap. Prices vary a lot, but it's probably easier to choose your monitor based on the features you're going to need, rather than price. If you are likely to move about a lot, make sure your monitor is portable. Do you want batteries or mains power? Would you like video monitoring as well?

Bouncer Seat

Again, this is not necessary, but it is very useful! Babies like to watch everything that's going on around them, and it's easier on their behalf if they're raised slightly from the horizontal. You can purchase a variety of fancy bouncer seats, with everything from toy bars to battery powered bouncing. I only ever had a really basic fabric bouncer, and most of times the toy bar wasn't even attached. Both my kids loved them, and also the good thing was that I always knew where these were! Very handy, specially when I had been cooking dinner. What is important to remember is you should not place a bouncer seat on the raised surface, they should continually be positioned on the floor or ground.
